Love to work on cars?

Check out AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE.

What is it?

The demand for automotive technicians is very strong. Automotive service involves inspecting, fixing and maintaining the various components that keep a car working properly, including the engine, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical systems, tires, and heating and air conditioning. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is the national organization that administers the ASE Certification that all auto technicians must pass to work in the industry.

What will I do?

  • Perform diagnostics, often using computerized equipment to identify the problem
  • Follow a checklist to make sure all related parts are examined to pinpoint what’s not working
  • For major issues with the engine, transmission, brakes, or other critical parts, certain parts must be removed and repaired
  • Many times, just basic maintenance is required, like replacing tires, worn brake pads, or changing the oil.

Leads to these jobs:

  • Automotive diagnostician
  • Automotive technician
  • Auto shop owner
  • Mobile electronics installer
  • Service writer

Is this for me?

  • Working in the automotive service industry requires strong customer service and communication skills, relating well to customers
  • Technical aptitude and good diagnostic and problem-solving skills are important to make sure the right vehicle parts are being fixed or maintained
  • Automotive technicians should also have a good work ethic, as well as solid dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
