What is it?

Do you like helping other people look their best, including fashionable hair styles, manicured nails, and perfect skin? Then pursuing cosmetology is a career path that you should consider. Cosmetology is the study of cosmetic treatments to the hair, nails, and skin. Cosmetologists perform an essential role in helping people look and feel their best, and typically work in beauty salons, spas, or barber shops, but also work in more retail locations like department stores, hotels, and cruise ships.

What will I do?

Cosmetologists typically will specialize in one of three areas: hair, nails, or skin:

  • A hair stylist will be trained on proper hair cutting, different design styles, coloring and dying, and braiding
  • A nail technician will make sure that their client’s finger and toe nails are healthy and beautiful
  • A skin or make-up specialist will provide treatments to make their client’s skin feel smooth, soft, and healthy, while also applying make-up to make their clients look their best

Leads to these jobs:

  • Color / perm specialist
  • Hair designer
  • Hair stylist
  • Make-up artist
  • Manicurist
  • Nail technician
  • Salon owner
  • Skin care specialist

Is this for me?
